How much gold can I carry to India without custom duty?
The amount of gold you can carry on a flight to India depends on your residency status and whether you are carrying gold jewelry or gold bars/coins.
Residents of India
Residents of India who have been living abroad for more than one year can carry up to 1 kg of gold jewelry without paying customs duty. However, there are different limits for male and female passengers:
Male passengers: 20 grams with a maximum value of Rs. 50,000
Female passengers: 40 grams with a maximum value of Rs. 1,000,000
Please note that these limits are for gold jewelry only. If you are carrying gold bars or coins, you will have to pay customs duty on the entire amount.
Residents of India who have been living abroad for less than one year are not eligible for any duty-free allowance on gold. They will have to pay customs duty on the entire amount of gold they are carrying.
Non-residents of India
Non-residents of India can carry up to 1 kg of gold jewelry or gold bars/coins without paying customs duty. However, they must declare the gold to customs upon arrival in India.
